ALYS BEACH – While Fonville Press has been a treasured presence in Alys Beach since 2004, new ownership in 2022 brought with it a refreshed location, along with additions that expanded its offerings, its atmospheric appeal and its demographic. As they put their own stamp on the iconic café, husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Angela Walton has the goal of paying homage to the original concept – with a twist.

Re-imagined with an in-house market and bar, Fonville Press’s café environment now extends to include eye-opening morning brews as well as specialty beverages and a full bar, along with a selection of grab-and-go sundries and gourmet market essentials.

“Our intention remained the same as that of the original,” said Jeremy Walton. “We wanted to serve as a community gathering space to bring people together over tasty bites and shared memories. Fonville Press is really just beginning. It’s such a diverse concept that we knew from the start we would need to focus on the fundamentals of being a cafe-market-bar-bakery-coffee shop that caters to breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

As Walton said, “Our first year of ownership was very much learning what the people wanted from Fonville.”

It was these findings that led to their focus on such changes as an expansion and enhancement of the outside patio to feature additional landscaping with more shade. They are also working on expanding their dinner experience to include full service at night. On the market side, the team at Fonville are working toward offering more take-home meal options and eventually adding delivery. Fonville Press

“We also want to do even more events and live entertainment to really make it a community gathering spot,” Walton noted.

Perfectly imagined to create an appealing atmosphere, Fonville Press boasts a casual, cool and coastal feel in its new location on the first floor of The Lucian, brought to life by the collaborative efforts of the Waltons and Anthony Vallee. Perfectly at home within the coastal community of Alys Beach, dark green- and salmon-colored accents, natural wood elements and midcentury Malibu-inspired décor exude a casual-yet-glamorous feel that is balanced by the unexpected presence of whimsy. Look around and you’ll see tiki mugs adorning the open shelving, multi-colored tabletops that bring pops of visual interest and pink-tasseled umbrellas over the outdoor patio seating – all bits of quirkiness that are oddly suited to the space.

Fonville Press’s continuously evolving all-day menu offerings include café favorites such as coffees, teas and specialty drinks as well as rotating seasonal cocktails. Their in-house pastry and bread program, spearheaded by Chef de Cuisine Jamielyn Arcega and Executive Chef Coleman Jernigan, has created top sellers including Fonville’s signature Chocolate Croissant and a rotating variety of bagels – all of which are baked fresh daily on-site. Fan favorites include the Bagel & Lox Board, Turkey Bacon Club, the Royale with Cheese, Mezze Board, and a selection of delicious pizzas, all built atop the foundational element of Fonville’s incredible breads.

“Fonville Press has an atmosphere and a menu that invites people to come in and stay a while – whether our guest is a local homeowner, a visitor on vacation or someone just passing through the area,” said Walton. “We are a standout destination.”
