Baytowne Provisions: providing a little of everything

Reimagined restaurant and general store serving three meals a day

By Michelle Farnham
November 9th, 2017

BAYTOWNE WHARF – Jim Shirley, the culinary mastermind behind such local dining venues as Great Southern Café, 45 Central, The Bay, and The Meltdown on 30A, has revamped his former The Baytowne Melt into Provisions Baytowne. Unlike any other restaurant in the area, the full-service restaurant, bar, and general store offers more than just a meal.

Breakfast and lunch are ordered in the attached Provisions General Store and offered as take-out or dine-in over in the adjoining dining room. Dinner is full-service in the dining room.

The former Graffiti & The Funky Blues Shack space has received a beachy remodel. The soaring walls of the formerly dark dining room are now done in shades of sage green, bathed in light from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Seating options include the dining room, stools at the bar, or elect to sit on one of two decks with impressive wooded views of the Baytowne Marina. Fall temps make the latter a real treat right now.

The food

Start the day off with biscuit sandwiches, breakfast bowls, or one of the breakfast special platters, offered from 8 to 11 a.m. For something a bit different, give the pimento cheese biscuit a try, made with scrambled egg, pimento cheese, and bacon. The Pig Pen Bowl offers tater tots covered in grits, two eggs your way, pork, and cheddar cheese. The über-trendy avocado toast is available here, too, served on sprouted seed bread and drizzled with olive oil, red pepper flakes and sea salt. Thirsty diners will appreciate the mimosas and bloody Marys on the menu, alongside Gouda cheese grits.

For a midday bite, you’ll find many menu items from The Baytowne Melt made the trip across the street to Provisions, including the Mac and Cheese Melt and the Brie and Bacon on cranberry walnut bread. Cold sandwiches, burgers, seafood baskets, salads, and po’ boys are also up for your lunch consideration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an assortment of a la carte sides.

Dinner includes unique offerings like cheese curds with Hog Island dipping sauce, Asian pesto snapper with a crab cake, and the cobia po’ boy. The thick-cut sweet potato fries are definitely worth a look, too. Paella Night runs every Thursday, from 6:30 until it’s gone, at $12 a plate.

The kiddos can get in on the fun with child-size portions of chicken tenders, mac and cheese, or grilled cheese. The really big “kids” can peruse the wine list – including wines by the glass or bottle.
