3 for 30a- Cinco de Mayo
By Natalie Haddock
Cinco de Mayo is historically celebrated to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla , El Día de la Batalla de Puebla , but for many it is also a day to celebrate Mexican culture and cuisine.
If you’re looking forward to a lively Cinco de Mayo celebration, filled with tacos and tequila and Mariachi bands, you might be miffed to learn the holiday unfortunately falls on a Tuesday this year, perhaps making it hard for many to celebrate. The festivities will not be passed over by work week doldrums, however, as this week’s installment of 3 for 30a is to highlight few great places along 30a complete with feasting and fiesta for all.
Friday, May 1st – Start your weekend by picking up a few necessities at El Mercadito, a small Latin grocery store north of Hwy 98 in Santa Rosa Beach and tucked away in the back of the store may be one of South Walton’s best kept secrets, their deliciously authentic Mexican lunch counter. Here you will find a few of the most mouthwatering traditional Mexican/Latin dishes. Even if you just plan to stop in for a little grocery shopping, sure one item on your list is the banana leaf wrapped tamale, simply perfecto!

Saturday, May 2nd –Cantina Laredo in Grande Boulevard will be presenting their annual Cinco De Mayo festivities this Saturday, May 2nd, from 5PM to 11PM in Grand Park Stop in for authentic Mexican cuisine and top shelf margaritas. One of the most famous features about Cantina Laredo is their fresh made guacamole, prepared for you directly at the table. Family friendly activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, and live music from local band Heritage will also be available at Grand Park, adjacent to the restaurant.

Sunday, May 3rd – Offering traditional Tex-Mex fare with a coastal twist, La Cocina in Seacrest Beach is frequently voted the #1 Mexican restaurant along 30A. The Botanas Trio is an owner favorite which is a combination of roasted brisket wonton tacos, a beef and nut stuffed fried avocado, and a goat cheese and bean quesadilla. Stop in this weekend to create your own enchilada or taco combination and get a taste before the crowds start rolling in for this Tuesday’s Cinco de Mayo drink specials.
